Hampton B. Ball letter to home Wednesday - ca. 1918

Transcript
Wednesday Dear Home, Things still look pretty [ms Illegible: 1 wd] here but I guess I can stand it till it is over. I would give most any thing to get back to Camp Dodge with that bunch of white men but I don't suppose I will ever see many of them again. I am sending some more stuff home to night which is the last I have to send. I think I am leaving here to-morrow or next day but can not find out for sure. I have gotten to the point where it makes no difference where I go or when first so this thing stops soon. There is a fellow in Camp Custer, [Michigan] who owes me six dollars which he will send to me there unless he finds out where I am. If it comes just take it out of the letter and keep it as it may get lost. Send the letter on to me if there is any. I was just sent down for my gun and other equipment. I have it all now except two coats and one more pair of ten pound shoes (No 10 E E). They would not do to dance in for they have a horse shoe on the heel and a large headed steel had nails in the sole.

It is still cold here but it stopped raining Tuesday. I have not had a chance to see any of the camp and doubt if I will. I would like to get into Atlanta but will not get there either. It would be great to get to stay here this summer if there was anything to eat but there isnt unless you buy it. There is no butter or sugar at all and they tell me that they only get it on special occasions. We had baking powder biscuits for breakfast this morning tho and I ate seven. The were not extra good but I was hungry. Dont send any thing to eat until I tell you to because it may be on the road a long time and would not be good when I got it. Must close now and write to Jo & Belle. Hamp. P.S. Put the enclosed with the rest of my war stuff in papa's drawer.
