France is only a few miles up the valley I sent you a bunch of post cards last night showing past of them so you can see about what it looks like here. Will be here several days yet then I return to the company. Will have a new job when I get back which take most of my time but I do not think it will be long before all of my work in this war will be over then I can get back to school. The news of the finish got here only a short time after our train pulled in I wish you could have been here to have seen the French people. Every body wore a smile and all the bells were ringing. I know there was some celebration in the U.S. when the news came. Jerry is now in the condition that he can never raise his sword again so it looks like there will be peace for a long time. I may have to go back to the border before I get to start home but I hope not. I had many exciting experiences at the front this last time. Shells hit on all sides of me, once burying me in a hole, but I came out with out a scratch. I never did believe Jerry had the stuff to hunt me. I have been thru gas and everything and feeling better than ever have in France no I am not

worrying about my self. I had a great birthday while up this time. I was busy for a stretch of sixty four hours without a stop which is the longest time I have gone without sleep since I came over. I did not think about it being my birthday tho until I saw a paper a few days later. Up there it was hard to tell what day it was. I am need of nothing so do not worry about me. I have everything I can carry now. I sleep warm and have plenty to eat so can wish for no more. Will close now but will write again in a day or two. As ever Hamp Cpl Hampton B. Ball Co. B. 326 Inf A.
