American Field Service World War I Records
The American Ambulance Field Service (later known as the American Field Service or AFS) was a volunteer American ambulance and camion corps coordinated in April 1915 by A. Piatt Andrew, a former Director of the U.S. Mint. The organization’s 2,500 volunteers served alongside the French military and evacuated 500,000 casualties in France, Belgium, and the Balkans near the front lines of battle. The United States military absorbed the AFS ambulance and camion units into their ranks by the end of 1917. The Paris Cards in this collection were used as administrative records during the war at the AFS headquarters in Paris, France, and include basic details about each AFS volunteer and his service.
