Silver Star Son in Service Banner
Details
Title | Silver Star Son in Service Banner |
Description | This service flag belonged to the family of Private William C. Preetorius. He was wounded on September 23, 1918 while serving with the 138th Infantry, 35th Division. During World War I, families of young men serving in the military proudly displayed service flags in their windows. Banners with a blue star indicated a man in the service, while a gold star indicated a man had died in service. Silver stars reputedly meant a family member was wounded in action. This banner’s blue star has been painted silver to represent Private Preetorius being a wounded soldier. |
