Description | Founded in 1812, the Ordnance Department entered WWI with only 97 officers, 1,241 enlisted soldiers, and numerous problems of unpreparedness including a lack of sufficient schooling for enlisted soldiers. By the end of the war, almost 8,000 plants were working on Ordnance contracts and more than 55,000 officers and soldiers had been trained in Ordnance schools, including six in France. |
