Description | Cartoon of a soldier carrying a Hotchkiss Machine Gun. Sergeant David Leavitt, of the National Guard Machine Gun Company 138th Infantry, 35th Division, drew this cartoon. The caption reads, “The Way the Old Hotchkiss felt on the 4th day of the Drive.” After the war, Leavitt was known for his murals in St. Louis and Chicago. During World War II he developed a dye used to locate downed pilots in the ocean and he designed aircraft markings still in use today. |
