Title | Leavitt Sketch - Soldier with Equipment |
Description | Cartoon of a soldier struggling to walk with all the equipment he was required to carry. It was drawn by Sergeant David Leavitt who served with a machine gun battalion in the 35th Division. The caption reads “Sherman Didn’t Know A Thing About War. He Rode A Horse.” The cartoon refers to the Civil War general William T. Sherman and his “War Is Hell” speech. After the war, Leavitt was known for his murals in St. Louis and Chicago. During World War II he developed a dye used to locate downed pilots in the ocean and he designed aircraft markings still in use today. |
