Lace-Up Leggings
Details
Title | Lace-Up Leggings |
Description | These lace-up leggings represent another version of the standard issue puttee, or lag wrap. Worn around the shins, puttees and leg wraps were designed to keep a soldiers leg’s from being snagged in barb wire on the battlefield. The standard issue leg wrappings were the least successful as they were made from loose cloth material. They didn’t stand up to the test of barbed wire and were insufficient for use in “no man’s land”. The more durable leather puttees provided better protection from barbed wire snags, but were not as flexible as the leg wraps or lace-up style leggings depicted here. The lace-up leggings were strong and flexible as they were made from canvas and were preferred by many servicemen. They were easy to repair and were reinforced with metal grommets and buckles. |
