Description | Joseph Garneau Weld used this early French M-2 gas mask carrier during his service as an ambulance driver. The carrier is inscribed with Weld’s name, unit, and the battles he fought in including Argonne and Verdun. A native of St. Louis, Weld joined the American Field Service and worked as an ambulance driver with the French army. When America entered the war, Weld enlisted in the United States Ambulance Service. Weld earned the Croix de Guerre and French Field Service Medal. |
