Description

The William Joel Stone memorial stands to commemorate one of only six United States Senators to oppose America’s entry into the war. Stone was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1884, serving until 1891, then elected as Missouri’s Governor from 1893 to 1897. After his tenure in Jefferson City, Stone was elected to the United State Senate in 1902, where he served until his death. During his time in the Senate Stone voted against America’s entry into WWI citing the resolution as a “monstrous mistake”. In the same April 4th, 1917 speech, Stone went on to say, “But if the powers constitutionally authorized to speak for the people on this momentous issue shall decide for war, then my eyes will be blind to everything but the flag of my country, bourne by American boys through the storm of war and my ears deaf to everything, save the call of my country in its hour of peril.” William Joel Stone died in office in April of 1918, before the conclusion of the Great War.
