Missouri Over There

Powers, Dr. Everett Papers

Everett Powers was born on June 2, 1869 in Labaddie, Mo.  After receiving his medical degree, Dr. Powers established an ear, eye, nose and throat specialty practice in Carthage, Mo. in 1902.  Dr. Powers was inducted into the service at Carthage in August 1918 and served as a captain and physician in the U.S. Army Medical Corps at Camp Dodge, Iowa.

In numerous letters to his wife, Dr. Powers described the hospital at Camp Dodge and how the staff struggled to care for patients stricken with influenza.  His correspondence offers a unique perspective into the life of a medical practitioner on the home front during the deadly influenza outbreak of 1918.
