Musbach, Carl F. Collection

This collection features photographs, booklets, and postcards revolving around Sophia Neth and her son Carl Fred Musbach. Musbach served with the 66th company, 5th Marine Regiment, 2nd Division, and was killed in action on July 18, 1918 during the battle of Belleau Wood. One notable item includes Neth’s journal kept while on her Gold Star Pilgrimage in 1931 to visit her son’s grave. Musbach’s marine regiment played a vital role in pushing back the German line during the summer of 1918. The Battle of Belleau Wood, beginning on June 6, 1918, was the first large scale battle fought by American Marines. Musbach is one of the 1,060 missing soldiers memorialized within the chapel at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery.
