Higgins, Otto P. Collection

Otto Higgins did not serve in the United States military, but spent the entire span of the war in training camps and overseas with the army as a staff correspondent for the Kansas City Star. He wrote about soldiers from the Mid-West, especially Missouri and Kansas. Higgin's began his service with the old Third Regiment, and was with regiments at Camp Nichols, Fort Riley, Camp Funston, Camp Doniphan, Fort Leavenworth, Fort Sheridan, and finally France. While in France, Higgins spent his time with troops from Missouri and Kansas stationed at the front. He reported the actions of the American forces in all major engagements in which they participated, including the battle of Belleau Wood. He later went to Germany with the Kansas City battalion of Signal Corps and the 89th Division, and returned home with the 35th Division.
