Description Born in St. Louis and educated at Smith Academy and Washington University, Captain Alexander Rives Skinker had spent the year preceding the U.S. entrance into WWI as second lieutenant of Company I at the Mexican border. He was promoted to first lieutenant in December of 1916 and promoted again to Captain in July of 1917. The regiment arrived in England in May of 1918, crossed into France, and was later assigned to the Battle of the Argonne Forest. Skinker was killed on the first day of the battle, shot by enemy machine-gun fire while investigating the lay of the land. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.
